Thing 23 Reflection

I feel that I learned a lot from doing the blog of 23 things. I had to explore on my own to find new ideal of technology to share with other members of the blog. I will use my blog for my websites and I hope that other teachers will place more resources on the site to help others in technology. I do have a better understanding of the NETS-T.  As teachers of technology we must promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking. We need to participate in global learning communities to develop creative applications of technology to improve our students learning.

Thing22, conference

I attended the annual West Virginia Statewide Technology Conference " The Cloud" at the Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, West Virginia on August 3-5 2010. It was an exciting four days that I spent in Charleston. We had several days of training that ways available to us and some was useful while others seemed to be sales pitches. We had fun getting acquainted with TIS members and working on assignments for the session. I did not go to the capitol tour and I am sad that I missed it. Everyone talked about how nice the event was. I sure will attend it next year if the opportunity is presented. We had several guest speakers and the one that sticks out in my mind was Sean Tuohy. His story was written in a movie entitled "Blindside" I enjoy listening to his inspirational speech of how important it was to consider kids like Michael Oher and how they are falling through the cracks every day? And how can we make an impact big enough to change a broken system? I am looking forward to attending the conference again next year.

Sensibly Incorporate Technology in the Classroom "Its all about the Writing"
Alan Sitomer  October 12, 2010

Understanding why the bells and whistles of technology will not replace the need for students to critically read, write and think
Seeing how cutting edge tech tools can (and should) coexist side-by-side with projects that can be done by candlelight.
Recognizing that successfully incorporating technology in today’s classroom BEGINS WITH THE WRITING!
Getting comfortable with the idea that technology is evolving at such a rapid pace that there is no more “keeping up”.
Re-conceptualizing our methodologies so that we can allow students to demonstrate their full capabilities without unnecessarily holding them back simply because we, the educators, do not have the same technological abilities that they, the students, possess.

Thing 19 - Skype

I already had a skype account and I use it a lot. I have used the site to collaborate with Patricia Brown's class at Burch High during the first part of the school year. I want to be able to collaborate with other teachers in West Virginia on different resources for social studies class. We are getting ready to do a project of Christmas around the world. I am trying to fine a secure teacher that might have their students assist in the project. My username is woodyspepper.

Thing 18 - AUP

http://lc2.boe.loga.k12.wv.us/auppersonnel.htm- staff.
This is our current AUP. at the beginning of the school year the form is sent home to the parents for signatures. Each homeroom teacher is responsible for getting their students forms returned. All of the forms are submitted to the vice principal. If a student does not have a signed AUP, the student is not allowed to use the internet. If the class is doing internet research that student is required to go to the library for research materials. I have always got my forms returned and I have not had the problem with not returning the forms. It is very important because all of the benchmarks are also in the internet.

Thing 17 - twitter

I found a cool twitter on a website that build vocabulary skills. The game is called vocabulary fun. I also found some cool ipod apps to download for free.

It provides you with the basic tools you’ll need like shapes, clip art, and a drawing tool. You can search Web pages from within Twiddla and mark those the webpages. There’s is also a a chat feature you can access. Twiddla sessions can be left open to the public so anyone can join in or you can make them password protected and invite specific people. You can bookmark twiddla to any of your sites.
http://www.twiddla.com/451057 I placed a graphic organizer on Twiddla for story mapping. The students enjoyed this.

I feal the same way. Sometimes I wonder which site I am going to check first. I wish that someone would incorporate all of the sites into one site. Just as soon as we get used to using these sites something new will be developed.

Using the Wordle website is a excellent tool. I use this for brainstorming ideals after reading a book. The students do a wordle of all the memories from the story that was read. I get some cool wordles.

Thing 10 - Digital Age Assessment

I did not choose just one lesson, I choose all of my lessons for my target goal.  I plan on using Manhattan if I can get the admistration to get us access email accounts. At the present time I am using google docs. I use google docs to download classroom materials and assignments for parents and students to access. I link the site to my edline account for parents to see. I use google calendar for my personal needs as well as my daily lesson plan assignments. The calendar is great for students to access to see material missed when absent also the students know what is required of them for the month.  The calendar also list school activities and lunch menu for the month. All information is on one calendar. I want my students to enjoy technology and understand that technology is an excellent tool that can be used on many different ways to benefit you. I want to motivate my students to develop their own calendars to work on organizational skills. Other teachers tell me that I am too organized that I have a little OCD, but I just like being prepared. I want to prepare my students for the future.

Thing 2 Blog

http://23thingsmwoody.blogspot.com/
Blogging is new for me. I love working with Technology, but occasionally I run out of time checking all the social networking sites. I have MySpace and Facebook. I guess I need to add blogging and twitter to the list. I hope everyone is enjoying their adventure as a TIS.
